Raising Donations in a Crisis, Part 3: Q&A With Karen Brooks Hopkins

Recently, Jim chatted with fundraising expert Karen Brooks Hopkins to see what live events organizations can do to raise funds when they can’t produce in-person events. You can watch the full conversation here, or read on for an excerpt of their conversation (which we’ll post in three parts -- click here for Part 1 and Part 2). First, a little about Karen: The Brooklyn Academy of Music President Emerita has more than 30 years of experience in fundraising and is the author...

Goldstar Gives Back This Thanksgiving — and You Can, Too!

Most people see Thanksgiving as a time to spend in the company of people they care about, reflecting on the good things in their lives and, hopefully, a time for a little relaxation. That’s understandable. That might be you. Life can be stressful and rushed, with lots of different demands. Just getting the turkey and pie together and having the house in decent shape for guests can feel like a full-time job! But what if you could be another kind of...

It's a 10-year tradition and one of my favorite things. The...

Make Somebody’s Thanksgiving Better, in Just a Click or Two

I’m really proud of something that we do at Goldstar this time every year. We call it the Thanksgiving Appeal, and it’s a time when we ask Goldstar members (and everybody else) to support a local organization. These organizations support low-income and homeless people throughout the year, but many of them really turn it on at the holidays because the need becomes all the more acute. I’ll tell you how this started. It was our second year in business -- 2003....
