Found: Another “Nutcracker” Lover Like Us
I found this article about dance choreographer Alexei Ratmansky quite fascinating. Sarah Crompton, the author of the piece, says, “If Alexei Ratmansky were a film director he would be as famous as Martin Scorsese.”
I’m also excited, in his work at American Ballet Theatre, that he sees the importance of productions of The Nutcracker. Crompton quotes him as saying, “Christmas, presents, sweets, toys coming to life, scary mice, boys and girls on stage — all appeal to children.”
Some people in the world of dance, especially those at its upper echelons, look down on the popular but seasonal production of The Nutcracker, so it’s great to see a person recognized as a leader in the craft treating it with a lot of respect. Of course, maybe you’d expect to hear that from a guy who runs a contest every year about the country’s best Nutcracker.
