\”The Nutcracker”: Robert Joffrey’s beloved classic with the Chicago PhilharmonicJoffrey Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker, Robert Joffrey’s beloved classic with the Chicago Philharmonic, will take the stage one last time for its final season, from December 4 to 27, at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre.

One of Chicago’s most popular holiday traditions now in its 28th year, Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker has won the Goldstar National Nutcracker Award — the only award honoring live performances of the holiday classic — twice. How does a production win the Nutty? Goldstar members rate the Nutcracker-themed productions they attend. The Nutcracker with the highest user rating will be named the winner and receive The “Nutty” (a statuette) along with a cash prize for the company’s education programs and the honor of being able to boast, “the best loved Nutcracker in the U.S.”

Next year Joffrey Ballet welcomes the world premiere of a new version of The Nutcracker created by Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris), with Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition as its backdrop, reports Hedy Weiss for Chicago Sun-Times. Weiss also highlights some history and intriguing facts about Joffrey’s The Nutcracker and shares reminiscences from dancers both past and present.
