Spotlight On … Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s X’s and O’s (A Football Love Story)

America loves the athleticism of football athletes, but is it right to also love the bone-crushing, head-banging and body-bashing nature of the game? Playwrights KJ Sanchez and Jenny Mercein tackle this very topic in their new drama, X’s and O’s (A Football Love Story), now playing at Thrust Stage at Berkeley Rep.

On Super Bowl eve, this NPR feature covered the inspiration behind the fascinating and hard-hitting docudrama and where its headed in the future.

The article concludes: “Sanchez says she hopes to take the play to colleges and high schools. She wants to start conversations like these in the community, especially among young people who will decide whether to play or not — and how much of their future they want to bet on football.”
